Dolly Rebecca Parton

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on the 19th of January 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee and was raised in Sevierville, Tennessee to Avie Lee Parton, who was a housewife and Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer. She was on Knoxville TV at 12 years old. At 13 she had a recording contract with a small label, and singing on the Grand Ole Opry. After finishing the high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville to launch her country-singing career. Carl Dean, an asphalt-paving businessman, was drawn to her and they were married on May 30th the 30th of May, 1966. Porter Wagoner saw her singing and invited her to appear on The Porter Wagoner Show (1961). She stayed on the show for seven years. Her duets were made famous and she was a part of the group that Porter Wagoner had at the Grand Ole Opry. She also sold records and toured. When her 1970 hit "Joshua" was ranked at the top spot, her popularity was so great that she was unable to compete with his. In 1974, she set out by herself and recorded duets alongside his. In 1974, she parted ways with the duo to become a solo artist. Dolly became a hugely admired performer and songwriter. Dolly received numerous Country Music Association awards (1968, 1970, 1971, 1975, and 1976). She was a diminutive (5'0") beauty, who was a natural for television. In the mid-1970s, Dolly was often seen on Talk-shows and television specials, before having her own show, Dolly (1976). In 1977, Dolly got her first Grammy award: Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her hit song "Here You Go Again." Dolly's first film appearance was in 9 to 5 (1980) in which she received an Oscar nomination for her songwriting of the title tune. She also received Grammy awards 2 and 3: Best Country Song, and Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the track "Nine to Five." Her most notable roles were in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and Rhinestone (1984) where she sang "Tennessee Homesick Blues". Dolly Parton Enterprises is her media empire worth over $100 million. In 1986, she launched Dollywood which is a Tennessee theme park located in Pigeon Forge. This was in celebration of her Smoky Mountain upbringing. She was a character in Dolly, the Dolly (1987) television show. For "Trio" she was awarded the Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy in 1988.
